Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it could raise an item's Mark level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a certain amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's base stats increases as it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all the leveled up perks (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive dependent on who you employ and what you decide to do. This is due to the sheer number of perks that have to be altered to upgrade an item.

The level of an item is a commonly used measurement of power and can be seen on all tooltips for items. It can also be used as a gating requirement while waiting to queue for dungeons and raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is restricted to the lower levels). Players can view their average item level in their character sheet.

When deciding whether to purchase or sell gear players can evaluate the level of an item. It's an excellent indicator of the quality of an item and the amount of damage it will be capable of dealing with. The level of the item can be used to compare items when evaluating the inventory of a seller.

On PC, you can see the level of the item by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including the ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are various theories on how the item level calculation is carried out. One theory is that the item level is a numerical value derived from a formula that determines the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different values, and also that gems in sockets add to the item's overall value. This could result in a calculated item's ilvl that is usually very close to Blizzard's real level of the item.

It's not the only thing that affects the ilvl of an item. The degree of the area in which the item was dropped can alter its stats. For instance, it could increase the item's haste, or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have more value than items dropped in lower-level instances.

The item's stats can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game uses a variety of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and to prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The stat modifications of weapons boost base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by a player's level.

Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats of the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. For instance, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, while items with rare tiers can be upgraded many times at higher prices.

Another way to change the stats on an item is to use affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Affixes can do things like give the item extra damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving the dead or cutting down the duration of cooldowns) or make the item unique by adding an exclusive name to the item.

All affixes can be being re-rolled right now by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button. This will cost a certain amount of gold and other items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges, similar to other methods of rerolling.

In addition to rerolling affixes, players can also choose which stats to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the item level, but all items are guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within the specified range, unless it is an exclusive item or a God roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or choose which stats to increase. But as with base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis and the item compare interface would not display all the possible stats gained or lost at once.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the likelihood of finding items and the properties that are spawned from loot drops and the intensity of those properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player a chance to upgrade their equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more valuable in the early game than later ones since most players prefer higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade probability, which increases with each item level and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons can be created or spawned with the Luck property, which has an initial value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) to add another 40 luck or to boost an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Additionally some items, like the Hollow infused weapon can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be found in the shop or crafted by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their success rate or prevent them from losing an item if the upgrade is unsuccessful.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading that item and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to the extent to which the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.

The performance of an can be affected by the luck of that item level upgrade. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent and every item with Luck increases this chance by 5percent.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above the items in the inventory. This could block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
